SPAN 495IP: International Programs (Spanish Phonetics)
SLL 170: Spanish Phonetics [Fonética española]
Description of the course:
A systematic study of the place and manner of articulation of Spanish sounds. Introduction to the concepts of phones, phonemes, and phonological processes by which sounds are modified in fluid speech. (Offered Fall Spring Semester)
Units: 3
Which MLO did this course meet: 1, 3
Course Reflective Narrative:
This class was a heavy, rich content based class. Every class would have their own powerpoint that went over different aspects of phonetics. At the end, we would have time to ask questions and clarify.
In class, one of the exercises we did every week was we would learn approximately ten different phonemes from the AFI (International Phonetic Alphabet) and at the week, we had to listen to our professor sound out. We then had to recognize what they were and write the proper spelling and what part of the mouth was the point of articulation.
There were other quizzes that were more in length as well as the AFI quizzes but there were no written assignments with the course because our professor wanted us to know by the end of the terms all the sounds and how to make them ourselves.
There was definitely growth for me in this class. This was my most difficult course out of any course that I took while abroad and also at my time at CSUMB. It felt at times like I did not understand the material and it was too hard because while the topic itself is so dense, we would go through so much material in the short class period. This class covered so much in so little time that it did feel overwhelming. However, This class did help me for another linguistics class that I took after coming back from studying abroad. Even though I felt like I did not get much out of the course, that was not the case when I had to remember content for another course.
