Units: 3
Which MLO did this course meet:1, 2
Course Reflective Narrative:
Spanish American Literature from the 15th to 18th century was a class I took abroad. In this class, we had a packet of different texts that highlighted several authors that were important in the 15 through the 18th century which served as the base of everything that we did for the class. Several of the readings that were included in the packet consisted of journals, books and poems. We spent a good amount of the semester talking about the conquest of Mexico by the spaniards and reading artifacts from that time period.
This class required the student reading the material before class, and in class time we would clarify any questions and have a class discussion about the assigned reading. The grade was compiled solely out of two in class exams and one end of year term paper. The exams were all long and short answer about the assigned reading packet. This class helped my analytical skills in Spanish, which was lacking before the class.
For my final paper in that class, we had to choose one author of the authors that we read and analyse other pieces of work that they wrote. I chose to write about Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz because I thought she was a person who stood up for her beliefs when it was not ideal for a woman to do so at that time period. In writing this paper, I got to know the time period better by analyzing the poems that Sor Juana wrote at the time.
This class was particularychallenging for me since I had not read too much Spanish literature and analyzed it before. It was difficult to comprehend some of the texts because it was written in olden Spanish, which is difficult for me to read. However, I met with my professor after class and that helped me a lot.
