Course Reflection Narrative:
I completed this course with Dr. Carlos Arrizabalaga. This course was an introductory course to Spanish linguistics. This class was challenging at first because it was the first linguistics class that I had taken at CSUMB. In a matter of a few short weeks, we had managed to learn so much about the different parts of the words, sentences and how to structure them properly. This was especially different for me because my mind works better if I can translate the concepts that I know from English to Spanish, or vice versa but with no prior knowledge, that was made more difficult.
One of the concepts that became more prevalent after this class was the concept of the sentence trees. Sentence trees were designed to identify, what part of speech the words is, how it is structures, and how it becomes a noun phrase verb phrase or something else. This encommpases everything that we had learned because it takes all the components learned and applies them into one method. I sometimes felt that one part was not useful but once it was combined with others, it all made sense. .
We had various homework assignments that re-enforced what we learned in class, a few exams and written assignments. This all helped us understand a bit more the concept of linguistics and understand the fundamentals.
Overall, this course covered the basics that we needed to learn about the different concepts in linguistics. This class taught me so many things that I later applied in my syntax, grammar and linguistics courses in the future.
