Course Reflection Narrative:
I took this course fall semester of 2013 with Dr Rafael Gomez. This course is a service learning course, which had in-class components such as readings and site reflections but also going out into the community and completing a minimum of 30 hours of service.
I decided to volunteer at Everyone’s Harvest, which is a non-profit organization that organizes local farmers markets around the area. Some of the responsibilities that I was assigned were making sure that there was clear and effective communication between the vendors and the coordinators. Most of the vendors spoke broken English and sometimes needed assistance if they didn’t understand certain instructions given or forms that needed to be filled. One of the roles that I helped during my time at Everyone's Harvest was to help translate and paraphrase whenever possible. Although this was in an informal setting, the interactions and interpretations helped immensely with the language barriers that were present once in a while. This was useful to both parties because it would avoid any confusion and it would help ,me develop my interpretation skills and tactics. because my plans for after college is to become an interpreter or translator. This gave me hands on experience to better the interpreting tactics.
Community service has always been an important value at CSUMB. Oftentimes we complete these courses because of the requisite but for me, I have always loved helping out in my community. I learned some skills while working with Everyone’s Harvest and I will continue to utilize them in different areas in the future. The interpretation skills that I gained were especially helpful because my plans for after college is to become an interpreter or translator. This experience gave me hands on experience to better the interpreting tactics.
