SLL 102: Business Spanish [Español de los negocios]
Description of the Course:
The purpose of this course is to provide students of Spanish a range of advanced language structures, technical vocabulary and specialized terminology which the student may apply in the field of business. Specific objectives are to improve reading and listening skills as well as to enable active expressions of ideas, both orally and in writing, in a professional business environment. (Offered Spring Semester)
Units: 3
Which MLO did this course meet: 1, 2
Course Reflective Narrative:In Business Spanish we learned all about the European union, how to formulate different documents that would handle financial aspects as well as different emails. We had a booklet with different news articles in a whole range of topics, while still relating to business.
We had two oral assignments to present in class. One was to access our speaking skills and how well we could convey a topic to the audience. The second oral assignment was to pick a country, give a quick introduction about the country and talk about its biggest national company and why it is important to the economy. This was an oral assignment based on research as well.
To help with our reading comprehension, we would have to look for news articles that had to do something to do with the econiny and then present a one two two minute speech about what the article talked about. We could not make this assignment up on the spot because it required reading the articles in order to understand their meaning.
We had a final essay in this course. We had to find a commercial from a company, analyze the company and the product that they sold and whether or not as a consumer if this was something you would be compelled to buy. I chose purina one because it is the most recognizable dog food brand and i know that many people are dog owners. This commercial could be something that could sway dog owners to think about the choices and the food that they find their pet.
This final assignment helped me solidify all the terminology there is in the business aspect of things. There are very specific terms to describe what you want to convey and it's not good enough to just know the words but know how to implement them in an important document as well.
