SPAN 315: Intro Translation Span/Eng
Description of the course:
Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. (Prereq: SPAN 202)

Course Reflection Narrative:
This course was taken in the spring semester and taught by Dr. Carlos Arrizabalaga. In this course we were taught many methods to translate different forms of text that we may encounter. We learned the different ways of translation: literal translation and paraphrasing what the author had in mind. Most of the translations that we read are the latter option because there is no way to actually translate and have everything be 100 percent accurate. One of the lessons that was most valuable to learn was to translate the meaning, rather than the actual words.
We had various assignments throughout the course that focused on different genres of literature. The final assignment of the course was to translate about a thousand words of a novel, preferably a work that has not been translated in the opposite language.
One thing that i hope to take away from this clas is the skills that Dr. Arrizabalaga gave us to translate different types of documents. Translating a short story is different than translating an legal document and there are different procedures in order to translate as a accurately as possible. With a short story or something of that nature, there is more room for interpretation as possible and thus not have to translate as strict. In a legal document, one must be sure that what they are saying matches what the original document says. This skill that the teacher taught me is one that I can use in further classrooms and even incorporate it in different job fields.
